After nearly eight years of work on GTA 6, Rockstar Games promises that fans won't face another wait that long. In an interview with Bloomberg, development leads Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut said the engine, tools and team built for the game should let the studio make its next project more quickly. The studio did not say what that game will be.

What Rockstar said

The comments come from the same Jason Schreier report that we already summarized on Portal GTA 6. According to VGC and Dexerto, Hooker said the engine, the tools and the team built during this project "will allow us to do things more quickly." He also said the studio can build on that base, going "more sideways than upwards" to create more compelling content.

Garbut explained the reasoning: Rockstar changed a lot of things at a foundational level for GTA 6, but now that it is done, the studio does not plan to "rip it apart." He also described the game as the sum of experience: the last 30 years, he said, have been practice for where the studio got to.

What this means in practice

VGC notes that GTA 6 is Rockstar's first major new single-player game since Red Dead Redemption 2, released in October 2018. It also draws a historical comparison: GTA Vice City arrived about a year after GTA 3 because the technical groundwork was already in place. The article itself adds the caveat that nothing suggests Rockstar's next game will arrive that quickly.

In other words, the statement points to a shorter cycle than GTA 6's, which aimed for late 2025, moved to May 2026 and is now set for November 19, 2026. But "shorter" is neither a date nor a release promise.

What we still don't know

  • What Rockstar's next game will be. No project has been officially announced.
  • When it would arrive. The executives gave no timeframe.
  • The future of GTA Online. Coverage recalls that Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said Rockstar will support the current Online as long as players remain, but nothing has been decided about a new version.

Any title floated for the following game, such as a new Red Dead or L.A. Noire, is commentators' speculation, not information from Rockstar. For now, the studio's focus is the November 19 launch. The rumors about a PC version, which also appear in the coverage, remain unconfirmed by Rockstar.
